The bullfighting motif fits perfectly into the context of an artistic inspiration which has always moved back and forth between the fascination of myth and references to reality. Sassu’s interest in this subject was born with his experience of Spain, starting in the 1960s. The arena became for Sassu a special observation point for a particularly rich fragment of reality - the crowd, the violence of colors under the Mediterranean sun, the epic and mythic overtones to the challenge between a man and the force of nature summarized and concentrated in the bull - providing a base on which to draw and paint. The result is some works that are more descriptive and analytic and others more stringently synthetic like this Fine Bull, where color continues in any case to be the primary constructive element of the image, with unexpected but evident parallels with works from his Futurist years like The Miners of 1928.
