1948 tempera on paper 70 x 101 cm Fondazione Aligi Sassu e Helenita Olivares Lugano This interior view of a Maison Tellier (brothel), one of the numerous variations on the theme, plays on violent ranges of red and yellow. With respect to his 1943 painting, the artist here accentuates the dramatic squalor of the condition of the prostitutes, with recourse to figurative means deriving from Expressionism, which lend the scene a very strong charge of pathos. The red brushstrokes with veins of pink, violet, and fuchsia suggest an image of a cruel disintegration of the bodies. |
