1939
ceramic
h 27 cm
private collection

This refined piece dates to Sassu’s earliest forays into the field of ceramics. In it can be discerned both a connection with the analogous production by Fontana in those same years and a manifest continuity with Sassu’s own work in painting: for example the Cavalli al bagno, also of 1939. This is one of the first works in which the motif of the horse is isolated from scenes of battles or horsemen, taking on an autonomy of its own. This small sculpture, too, demonstrates already at this early date the artist’s mastery in handling a material particularly well suited to experimentation with color, obtaining evocative combinations and effects of iridescence.
