1934 oil on canvas 97.8 x 78 cm Fondazione Aligi Sassu e Helenita Olivares Lugano In the 1930s Sassu was an attentive observer of the urban reality in which he lived. In his canvases, he did not portray only the new architectural forms which were modifying the urban landscape, but also the variegated world populating it, as in the case of the two lovers in this painting, shown walking down the street. Their depiction as half-figures focuses attention on their gestures; the man, his synthetically outlined profile half hidden by the brim of his hat, seems almost to hide behind his companion, while she, showily dressed in green with bright red hair, advances more self-confidently. This is one of his first versions of figures on the street, a subject to which he would often return. |
