We find in this small composition some of the themes to which Sassu devoted his attention in the 1930s. One of his red men, a mythical and contemporary figure at the same time, is at the head of a new street in an urban landscape that is just taking shape. The road is blue, between a Rationalist house with red windows on the left and a completely red building in the background. The artist’s adoption of antinaturalistic colors here should not be seen merely in a Primitivist key, even though right in this period he was in frequent contact with Renato Birolli and Tullio Garbari, but as a precide decision to describe in a completely different tone the same places in the working class urban outskirts that Mario Sironi was depicting using much darker colors.
