1929 oil on canvas 66 x 115 cm private collection This work, which we can consider one of the first finished examples of Sassus progressive move away from Futurism, initiates a series of subjects connected with this sport, well-loved and practiced by the artist, which reappear in innumerable compositional variations throughout his entire career. In this painting, whose excellent state of conservation is due to a preparation with gesso, we perceive a kind of fresco-like layout which tends to simplify the scene. Behind the group of five cyclists with the little boy appears the urban landscape of the industrial outskirts of Milan being designed by modernist architects in just that period and which, not infrequently, was characterized by strong, bright colors. |
